What is a Partnership Pipeline?
A partnership pipeline is a visual system — usually a kanban board — that shows where every partnership stands at any given moment. Just like a sales pipeline tracks deals from lead to close, a partnership pipeline tracks collaborations from discovery to results.
Without a pipeline, partnerships live in email threads, Slack messages, and your memory. Things slip through the cracks. A pipeline makes the invisible visible.
The stages of a partnership pipeline
While every team customizes their stages, a solid starting point:
- Researching — you've identified a potential partner and are evaluating fit. You're checking their audience, content, and partnership potential.
- Reaching Out — you've sent your initial outreach email or message. The ball is in their court.
- In Conversation — they've replied and you're actively discussing collaboration details, terms, and logistics.
- Active — the partnership is live. A newsletter swap is scheduled, the integration is being built, or the co-marketing campaign is running.
- Completed — the partnership has concluded (or is ongoing). You're measuring results and deciding whether to continue or expand.
Why most founders don't have one (and should)
Partnerships feel informal — a DM here, a coffee chat there. So most founders don't think they need a structured pipeline. But the moment you're managing more than 5 conversations simultaneously, problems emerge:
- You forget to follow up with a warm lead
- You can't remember what you agreed to with a specific partner
- You have no idea which partnerships actually drove results
- You waste time re-researching partners you already evaluated
A pipeline solves all of this with minimal overhead — especially if your partnership CRM handles the pipeline natively.
Building your first pipeline
Start simple. Use 4 columns: Outreach Sent, In Conversation, Active, Completed. Add each partner as a card with their name, type (newsletter, podcast, SaaS, community), and next action. Move cards as conversations progress. Review your pipeline weekly to catch stale conversations and plan your next batch of outreach.
Partnership Intel includes a built-in kanban pipeline with automated follow-up reminders — so you can manage everything from discovery to outreach to tracking in one place.
